indians in the media

More often than not I skim through the articles on Indianz.com and indiancountrytoday.com - get my fix of indian news, to see what the latest and greatest is with the red skinned people, my relatives. I read an article that every now and then will have a impact or lasting impression on my thoughts. I read one today that has intertwined with my own previous thought, goals, ambitions maybe even just simply a dream of mine.

I was reading an interview with Sherman Alexie - indians near and far are more than familiar with him. He is cho'snaz. I've read most of his books as most indians have too. Well the interview began with sports questions. Awww I love my sports. Give me ESPN and Fox Sports and I am fine and dandy. One question asked about what Alexie thought about the represention of indians today and if it has changed any in the past years? He replied with the following..

Sherman Alexie: We’ve gone from environmental superheroes to casino-owning Americans. That’s about the only difference. You know, there’s no mass-marketed images of Indians; there’s no TV shows, there’s no big movies, there’s no newscasters, sportcasters… there’s no professional athletes, so images don’t change at all. Every image you think of from 20 years go still persists.

There is not mass marketed images of Indians....no sportcasters!!

So i have this dream, a hidden ambition, a desire to become a sportcasters standing on the 30 yard line interviewing Larry Fitzgerald, wide receiver from the Arizona Cardinals during half-time, or talking hoops with KG and his game plan to win the East this season or talking sports with some of the current sportcasters on ESPN, FOX, HBO. Now i dont know that i look the look for tv..or have the journalism experience..my desire is there.

It is somewhat saddening that indians have casino's, commoditites, and pow wows. What else? beer. lol. i'd love to see all the die hard teens who love basketball season and give their all to their senior year continue past this into college and pro ball...venturing from home and knowing that home will ALWAYS be there, because for the most I feel it will be there. Pursue your dream, indian parents push your child out the door, off the rez into the world to live out a dream. Change that response of Alexies.

I am 30..i am young enough, am I too old to pursue this dream, desire hope to be on the 30 yard line holding a mic and spittin my sports knowlege with athletes and passing the mic back to dan in the studio???

Train stories take I

Now that my butt be on the NYC train on a daily basis commuting to and from work, I somehow tend to end up in the trains with crazies, ppl who put their business all up in the train car, entertaining to say the least..a small timeout from my book if anything...leaving me with stories to entertain all. Well I unfortunately can't relive the past funny stories. so bear with me on new ones..today.

Well this morning I began my commute by trudging my Uggs boots and myself on a 6 block stroll partly through the snowy sidewalked as well as the icy roads to arrive at the jefferson stop for the lovely almost always delayed L train. I made it to the L train and lo and behold i walk to the platform and overhear the annoucer...'There is a L train approaching the manhattan bound track now." WooHoo..and I even got me a seat!! Normally mind you I have to stand while on the train for the 10 stops into the city to get to the stop i transfer but with the heavy snow fall that begun at midnight lastnite the train was like a ghost town empty for meeee to sit and read my book! I feel my lips and with my chapstick addicted self I carefully pull my chapstick out of my pocket, apply to my lips and BAM the lid rolls out of my hand and hits the wet floor! DAMN! DAMNIT! i don't see where it went, out of the corner of my eye I see a old latino man take three steps bend over and hand me my lid! AWWWW!!! HOW NICE! there are still some nice folk here in the city!!! he went out of his way to help a stranger out!! I somehow didnt realize my headphones and must have said it too loud.."THAAAAANK YOU!" the girl next to mee gave me a damn girl look. OOOH my bad. i smiled kindly at the man with my nicely cherry chapsticked lips :)

We make it two more stops...and a man stands in front of me holding the handrail above his head. So his belly and below belly are if you know what i mean are at my sitting eye level!! YIKES his pants are fully unzipped....he slowly removes one glove at a time...and reaches into his purple bag and removes a pink nintendo ds and goes at it playing some game. girl and i look at each other with a damn and hmmm look! So in my mind all these questions arise! Do i tell him, would i want someone to tell me, a random person at that...i think yes..wait no, or yes..yes..i would want to know but again as an adult i dont know that its that big of deal?? ya know..but as a man does it make a difference between girls and guys reactions to that..like imagine a dude and a gay dude stands in front of him with his zipper unzipped...hmmm?? anywho..i didnt tell him..he got off before i got off and made my way to the 2 train....oh well he'll realize later this morning and think to himself damn i exposed myself to a few ppl on the train! sad. lol. i get to the 2 train and BAM the train arrives! the train gods are watching over me today!! THANK U train gods and im off the slush in the streets of NY!
